The Daruma is something that I wasn’t too familiar with until recent years. Daruma dolls, like Maneki Neko figures, are said to bring you luck. They make great gifts for people who are in need of encouragement or just an extra bit of luck.

Daruma figurines are often used for setting goals or making wishes. When you first receive (or in this case, create) your Daruma, the eyes are blank. As you’re filling in the left eye, you set a goal or make a wish; when that wish or goal is achieved, you can fill the other eye in. It kind of acts as a reminder whenever you see it that you’re supposed to be working to achieve your goal.

Like the Maneki Neko, you’re able to customize your Daruma by changing the colour. Different colours mean different things, but red is the most traditional colour for the Daruma.

You have just finished your very own Daruma! When your goal or wish have come true, you can felt the other eye in! And if you’re planning to give this away as a gift, you can cut small circles out of black felt and just have the recipient glue the eyes in.

These are also the perfect size to make into keychains or bag charms so you can carry around your Daruma to be a constant motivation for you.
